History Makers: Stitch Samplers and Embroidery with Lucy Dillon
August 17, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
The History Makers Series connects objects from the NHA collections with its history, and the process of making the object. This provides participants a greater understanding and the significance of an object and its place in history. Learn how objects are cared for, cataloged, and kept for future generations to learn from.
Take a behind the scenes tour in the NHA archives, with the NHA collections manager, to see examples of samplers and embroidery done on Nantucket. Stitch samplers, many done by young girls as part of their education, have similar motifs, yet each stitcher handles the design in her own way.
Following the tour there is a hands on maker session where you will learn to stitch the Nantucket Tree, a design that is common in many of the samplers in the archives. This stitching session is good for both new and experienced stitchers.
Schedule:
9-9:45 am tour Gosnald Collections Facility, 89 Bartlett Road
10 – 12 pm 1800 House Workshop for hands on maker session.
Class Fee: Member Fee $125/ Nonmember Fee $175/ Materials Fee $15
