Sailing the USS Constitution, with Carl Herzog, Public Historian
May 8, 2022 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
How to Sail a Big Ship: Large square-rigged sailing ships like USS Constitution were able to use their numerous different sails to operate in rapidly changing and often dangerous weather conditions across the globe, as well to maneuver in battle to bring their guns to bear. We’ll discuss the physics of maneuvering a ship under sail, and look at the choreography of crew work needed to pull it off.
Carl Herzog is the Public Historian for the USS Constitution Museum. He holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, where he specialized in early American maritime history, and a MA from the University of Rhode Island. Prior to joining the museum in 2017, Carl taught maritime history, historical navigation and seamanship in a variety of experiential education programs held on traditional sailing ships at sea.
