Presented by Sandwich Glass Museum Curator Dorothy Schofield and Sandwich Library Archivist Deb Rich.
Join us as we explore the impact of the Glass Industry in Sandwich which changed the face of a typical New England farming community into a diverse, bustling commercial town. Beginning with the early history of Cape Cod’s oldest town, the natural resources of the area drew Mr. Deming Jarves, a Boston entrepreneur, to build his glass factory here. Doing so transformed the community with the influx of foreign workers and the opportunities for business.
We will touch upon the expansion of the Cape Cod Railroad and the introduction of institutions that met the needs of the new, culturally diverse population. When the factory closed in 1888, the economic downturn threatened the industrial progress. Fortunately, the town fathers explored a new opportunity to promote Sandwich as a vacation destination.
Our 8th Glassblowers’ Christmas opens Monday, November 13 through December 30th, 2017 along with our special exhibit “Considering Cartoons – the Art of Animation” a private collection of over 50 cartoon cels from famed American animation studios including Warner Bros. and Walt Disney. Local glass artists have provided interpretations of their favorite characters and films.
